Two Minutes With: Matt Foreman, Head of Exhibits

By Ashfield Meetings & Events

We recently interviewed Matt Foreman as part of our 'Two Minutes With' series. The series aims to bring together some of our team members for informative and enlightening interviews - all in short, sharp two minute reads.

What is your job title?
My job title is Head of Exhibits for Ashfield Meetings & Events

How long have you worked for Ashfield Meetings & Events?
I still feel a relatively recent addition to the fantastic team at Ashfield Meetings & Events, joining in November of 2017. That said, I have worked alongside the Ashfield teams here for many years as they supported shared clients. This helped me feel part of their family very quickly.

How did you start in the industry?
After following my dream of studying and working as a photographer for a number of years, I found myself more and more drawn toward the excitement of exhibits and live events. I had the pleasure of working on projects within the V Festival for Virgin for several years running, as well as some more obscure consumer events in London. This started to pique my interest and I have not looked back since.

What does your day-to-day role involve?
Ashfield is a busy and thriving workplace, with everybody really understanding what it is to be part of a big team. My job is to help feed into that fantastic energy with our great Exhibits Team, helping guide new opportunities and ideas, driving the best outcomes for our existing clients as well as solidifying the company's robust and efficient project delivery.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
We create some amazing experiences at Ashfield Meetings & Events and I feel very lucky to be part of that, however, It may be a bit clichéd, but seeing the ideas come to life on-site after several months’ work is very rewarding for me and the Exhibits Team.

How have you seen healthcare meetings and events evolve during your career?
Compliance is king! That said, although these regulations obviously lead to certain restrictions, they also create an environment where you have to be more creative with your ideas. Having the depth of Ashfield’s capabilities across the Insight and Med Comms teams to support what we do best, makes a huge difference to our success.

What can you say with ‘certainty’?
I can say with certainty that an integrated approach across exhibits, meetings and logistics is becoming increasingly important to pharma clients. Seeing all event-based activities as stages in a bigger plan is more and more relevant, not just with driving costs down, but also creating better efficiencies for clients themselves.

Who or what has had the greatest ‘impact’ on your career and how?
Much as I had many ”heroes” in the early stages of my career, the biggest impact on my career in recent times has been the time spent learning about how other industry sectors deliver their ideas. Being able to bring learnings and approaches from different perspectives gives me a more rounded and valuable point of view.

What advice would you give someone starting out in the meetings and events industry?
Decide on what you are good at and build a pathway of jobs that maximise those skills. Look at the long game. Do not worry about changing your mind. Share your success and take responsibility for your mistakes. Be nice, and find a good company like Ashfield Meetings & Events to work for, who will support and train you to be brilliant at what you do.
